How Domaincatcher.fi works

Domaincatcher schedules a controlled registration attempt for an expiring .fi domain. It cannot guarantee success: another registrar or party may register the domain first.

.fi Domain Backorder Service

Get ahead of the competition

Looking to secure a valuable .fi domain the moment it becomes available? Our .fi Domain Backorder Service helps you get ahead of the competition.

Also known as domain drop catching, the service lets you discover .fi domains scheduled to become available within the next 21 days and place backorders for the domains you want.

We’ll take care of the timing and attempt to register your chosen domain as soon as it is released.

Competition between users

First accepted order wins the catch slot

Domaincatcher does not run an auction. Only one catch order is permitted for a domain. The first order accepted by the database reserves the platform’s catch slot; later requests for the same domain are rejected.

If two users submit at nearly the same time, the request committed first receives the slot. The price does not move a user ahead of anyone else.

Registration uses Openprovider’s registrar price, subject to the platform’s centrally managed per-domain and daily spending limits.

An existing historical order also prevents a new duplicate order. Administrators can inspect duplicate history, but it does not create multiple competing workers.

Catch lifecycle

1. Find an upcoming domain

Domaincatcher imports .fi lifecycle information and calculates or records the expected availability time. Only a future, verified catchable time can be used to create an order.

2. Create the catch order

A signed-in user accepts the registration charge and naming-rights responsibility. The order is scheduled for the domain’s availability time. Bulk orders apply the same checks to every selected domain.

3. Preflight safety checks

Before registration, the catcher verifies clock synchronization, Openprovider authentication, registrar availability and price, account balance, the per-domain price ceiling, the daily spending limit and the runtime kill switch.

4. Timed registration queue

The independent worker waits for the release boundary and sends registration requests sequentially. Requests are never launched in parallel. Registration calls are spaced to respect Openprovider limits.

5. Retry and reconciliation

Retryable registrar or transport failures use progressively longer delays. A rate-limit response pauses registration traffic for at least five minutes. After an ambiguous response, Domaincatcher checks whether Openprovider actually created the domain before retrying.

6. Final result

A successful catch records ownership and the registrar domain ID, charges the reserved registrar cost and sends a success notification. A permanent failure releases the reservation and records the reason and attempt history.

Daily decreasing backorder price

The backorder price depends on how early the order is placed. There is one price tier for each day from 21 days to 1 day before release, and the price decreases as the release date approaches.

The displayed price is saved when the order is accepted. Waiting may lower the price, but another customer can reserve the domain first because only one order is accepted per domain.

No catch, no service fee. The price includes the catching service and first-year .fi registration. The optional maximum registrar price remains a separate technical safety ceiling.

Naming-right screening

How legal-risk analysis works

A signed-in user can run the analysis from a domain’s analysis page. Domaincatcher compares the domain label with company names in the Finnish PRH/YTJ open data and with EU trade marks obtained through the official EUIPO Trademark Search API and Signa.

The comparison normalizes spelling and Scandinavian characters, detects exact and similar names, and considers whether a matching EU trade mark is active. The result and its source coverage are saved with the domain.

LOW

The checks completed and no close company-name or trade-mark matches were found.

MEDIUM

One or more similar names or relevant active trade marks were found.

HIGH

An exact company-name match or an active exact EU trade-mark match was found.

UNKNOWN

The analysis has not been run, or the required sources could not be checked.

The result is an automated preliminary screen, not a legal opinion or permission to use the name. Finnish national trade marks, established names, international registrations, spelling variants and protected names may require separate PRH, WIPO, EUIPO and Traficom searches.

You remain responsible for confirming that the domain is lawful and does not infringe another party’s trade mark, business name or other naming right before ordering it.

Why choose us?

Why not? If we do not successfully catch and register the domain, our backorder service costs you nothing. You pay only for a successful registration.

Domain name disputes

Before placing a backorder, make sure the domain name you want complies with Finnish law and does not infringe protected names or trademarks. Read more in the guidance provided by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

We act solely as an intermediary for domain registration. You are always responsible for ensuring that the domain name you order is lawful and does not infringe third-party rights.
